Abstract:
Food security means, all people, at all times, have physical, social and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life. Major dimension of food security includes availability of food, Food access, stability and utilization. Reason behind food insecurity are Conflicts, climate change and global population. Upto 2050 the world human population will be 10 billion. As the result malnutrition, physical and metal stunted growth and many other mental health issues adding problems for human being existence. The diversity and the quality of food are key factors to address burden of malnutrition. Vegetables are essential part of our diet and good resources of phytonutrients and fibers. The growing number of middle- and low-income class consider vegetables an essential source of nutrition for their dietary lifestyle. However, biodiversity of vegetables is neglected. According to Maldrum et al. 2018 only 1,100 species of vegetables are recognized. Morphological, phytochemicals and molecular markers are used for genetic diversity exploration. However morphological and phytochemical markers are under the influences of climatic changes so their consistency is low. Molecular markers are more stable and consistent. My research group is working on SSRs and functional molecular to explore genetic diversity among the world-wide accession of Spinach, carrot and bitter guard. These studies help us to identify high yield and functional accessions of these vegetables. Isolated accessions are recommended for breeding programs
