Abstract:
A method is described to check the wind erosion of soil by spraying a mixture of synthetic rubber and an oil on soil surface. The compound is a blend of a conventional, emulsion-polymerized styrene butadiene latex with an emulsion of a mineral oil. It is a free flowing milky liquid, and when sprayed on soil or sand the film (1/8" – 1/4") dries out and acts as a flexible adhesive which binds the topmost layer of soil to form a firm resilient film. The system is capable of considerable variations as to the rubber/oil ratio; type and amount of emulsifier; rate of application; percentage of non-aqueous material on application; type of oil; and type of spray equipment; depending on the type of erosion and nature of soil. Tests are described which were carried out for: (1) wind tunnel experiments; (2) water penetration; (3) water evaporation measurements; (4) seed germination counts; and (5) exterior weathering.
