Abstract:
Marine algae (Ulva rigida, Codium iyengarii, Sargassum tenerrimum, Cystoseira indica, Jolyna laminarioides, Padina tetrastrommatica, lyengaria stellata, Cystoclonium purpureum, Melanothamnus afaqhusainii and Hypnea valentiae), collected from Buleji coast of Karachi, were tested for their nematicidal properties in terms of egg hatching, larval mortality and reduction of root-knot disease caused by Meloidogyne javanica. It was observed that these seaweeds showed strong nematicidal activity and significantly inhibited egg hatching, larval mortality and reduced root-knot index except C. iyengarii and U. rigida. The dry powder of marine algae not only reduced root-knot gall development but also improved growth of okra and tomato plants when used as soil amendment.
