Abstract:
Parkinson’s disease being the most prevalent neurodegenerative disease of today`s time is estimated to envelope 12 million population by the year 2040. In contrast to available treatment options like medications which are not sufficient to reduce symptomatic motor deficits like hypokinesia, resting tremors, stiffness of muscles, and postural instability for a long period. Deep brain stimulation(DBS), an emerging technology has significantly improved the quality of life, reduced dyskinesia and the need for dopaminergic medication. Deep-brain stimulation is the surgical procedure for patients with advanced Parkinson`s disease, globus pallidus interna and the subthalamic nucleus are target sites for this procedure leading to reduced symptoms associated with Parkinson’s Disease. The goal of this study is to highlight the value of deep brain stimulation (DBS) as a treatment for managing symptoms of disease, mainly motor symptoms which are frequently challenging to manage with medicine s.In this research, we have reviewed articles from PubMed, Google Scholar, and PLoS which helped us recognize the inclusion criteria like patients with idiopathic Parkinson’s Disease, patients with on/off stimulation of DBS, and on/off medication. Exclusion criteria are the animal studies and the studies published in non-peer-reviewed research journals alongside case studies. Our search includes the following terms “Parkinson disease”, “parkinsonism”, “deep brain stimulation”, “brain computer interface”, “deep brain implants”, and "parkinsons".Through the precise delivery of electrical impulses to particular regions of the brain involved in motor control, DBS helps regulate abnormal brain activity and improve motor performance. In conclusion, Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) has emerged as a valuable and effective treatment option for Parkinson`s disease patients who experience motor symptoms.
