Abstract:
The various methods for the determination of phase equilibria has already been outlined'. Thermal Analysis is commonly used for this purpose, which cover a group of related techniques whereby the dependence of the parameters of any physical properties of a substance on temperature is measured. One of the most widely used methods for the determination of phase diagrams is Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA). Principles of DTA and STA [Smith Thermal Analysis, which offer a significant improvements over DTA] are described in detail. Comparison of both these methods is also given, and finally STA is recommended for the determination of phase equilibria due to its accuracy, simplicity and ability to give quick and clear arrest at the phase boundary of any phase transformation.
