Abstract:
Experiments were conducted on the evolution of sorghum sudan grass hybrid for the utilization of cytoplasmic male sterility. The common sudan grass which was imported from Australia in the year 1930 was crossed with male sterile sorghum in the year 1963. The Fl seed of sorghum sudan grass hybrid was sown in April in the year 1964 and the data were recorded in the various morphological and physiological characteristics of Fl generation plants such as weight, number of leaves tillers, leaf area per plant, height of shoot and days taken to mature. These were compared with the parents and jowar variety No.263 and the standard variety. The crop remained under close observation throughout the years. Two cuttings of the fodder were recorded. The hybrid excelled both the parents i.e., male sterile sorghum and sudan grass by 134.2% and 341% respectively and standard by 57%. The hybrid presents the possibilities of the utilization of hybrid vigour on a commercial scale.
