Abstract:
Cirsium arvense (L) Scop. is the most common weed of wheat fields in the plains of Pakistan. Field experiments revealed that it reduces the growth of wheat in mixed cultures. Natural rain leachates and affected soil severely decreased the germination, early growth and bio-mass of wheat and barely in various laboratory bioassays. Ferulic, caffeic, p-OH-benzoic, p-coumaric and chlorogenic acids were, identified as some of the phytotoxins with the help of paper and gas chromatography. Some spots/peaks remained unidentified.
