Abstract:
Nocardia asteroides rarely causes infection in immunocompetent individuals but in immunocompromised patients it may cause diseas-e ranging from subcutaneous infections and pneumonia like illness to the involvement of brain and disseminated infection. A case of acute bacterial endophthalmitis due to Nocardia asteroides as a complication of cataract surgery (ECCE-Extracapsular cataract extraction) in a diabetic patient is reported. Despite effective treatment after diagnosis the visual acuity of the affected eye deteriorated and there was complete opacification of the cornea and the lens implant. Nocardia asteroides as a causative organism of the infective process in an immunocompromised patient should always be kept in mind so that prompt effective treatment can be started hence preventing the catastrophic complications.
