Abstract:
The arid areas of West Pakistan can be divided into two natural regions, namely, (a) Plains and (b) Arid hilly tract consisting of Baluchistan , Waziristan, Kurram, Khyber, Chitral, Gilgit, Indus Kohistan, and Upper parts of the valleys of Dir, Swat, Kaghan and Kishanganga. The important wild medicinal plants of the Plains are Plantago ovata, Peganum harmala, Citrullus colocynthis, Acacia arabica and Cassia angustifolia. The cultivated medicinal plants consist of mostly condiment and spice crops like Capsicum annum, Carum carui, Curcuma longa, Corianderum sativum, Foeniculum Vulgare, Mentha piperita, Pencedanum graveloens, Rosa damascena, besides Papaver somniferum and Ricinus communis. The wild medicinal plants of the arid hilly tract consist of Acacia senegal, Artemisia maritima, Ephedra gerardiana, Juniperus macropoda, Carum bulbocastanum, Ferula asafoetida, Thymus serpyllum and Rheum emodi. Most important cultivated plants of this region are Papaver somniferum, Cannabis sativa and Olea europea.
