Abstract:
Higher food consumption in the advanced hopper stages of Acrotylus humbertianus Saussure was due to their higher metabolism and vice versa. It may be inferred that lowering of the metabolism of Acrotylus hoppers could result in the lowering of their food consumption and hence, ultimately of the losses inflicted by them on the sorghum foliage. This would suggest the use of some antimetabolites, such as those of the sulpha-group, provided they do not affect the plant growth adversely. If otherwise, the use of antifeedants could be tried instead. These suggestions may provide an effective alternative to the use of insectides.
