Abstract:
Fenugreek is an imperative crop and is negatively influence heavy metal stress. Heavy metals not only effect the morphophysiological parameters of fenugreek but also can enter the food chain through this leafy vegetable. Silicon nanoparticles have been reported to have positive influence on plant growth. Therefore, in current study, the silicon nanonparticles were utilized to mitigate the harmful impacts of heavy metal stress (cadmium). Nanoparticles were prepared by green synthesis from rice husk using precipitation method. Different concentrations of nanoparticles were applied on the plant under cadmium stress. During vegetative stage both levels of stresses (CdCl2 1mM and CdCl2 10mM) caused increase in proline content, total chlorophyll content and sugar content while decreased in membrane stability index, relative water content and protein content. Whereas application of silicon nanoparticles under stress treatments showed significant improvement in various parameters like 53% and 46% increase in root length and shoot length respectively. 12.5% and 29% increased in fresh weight and dry weight of plant respectively. Seed vigor index (41%), relative water content (59%) and Membrane stability index (48%) and biochemical parameters also show improvement like protein content enhanced (73%), proline (37.5%), total chlorophyll (56%) and carotenoids (50%) which were negatively influenced by different levels of Heavy metal stress (cadmium) particularly higher level of stress (Cd 10mM). So, the conclusion can be drawn that silicon nanoparticles helps to reduce the toxic effects of cadmium on the growth and physiology of fenugreek.
