Abstract:
The end stage renal disease (ESRD) population requiring chronic maintenance dialysis or renal transplantation is growing at an exponential rate. This patient population experiences an excess morbidity and mortality due to arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease (CVD) outcomes. Recently, controlled evidence has been provided that hyperhomocysteinemia occurs more commonly (more than 85%) than any of the traditional CVD risk factors in ESRD patients on maintenance dialysis. Initial follow-up data further suggest that the markedly elevated fasting plasma tHcy levels found in these dialysis-dependent ESRD patients contributes independently to their excess incidence of fatal CVD outcomes. The present study was carried out to see the predialysis levels of homocysteine in ESRD (end stage renal disease) patients of Shaikh Zayed Hospital Lahore receiving regular hemodialysis. Fifty ESRD patients on hemodialysis and 20 healthy control subjects matched for age and sex were included in the study. tHcy (total homocysteine) in ESRD patients was significantly high (P
