Abstract:
The Federal and Provincial Health- Departments have embarked upon a major scheme to greatly expand the rural health care system. This expansion is essential if the general health of the population, especially that of infants and children, is to improve. This scheme addresses itself to the underlying determi-nants of disease, especially infectious diseases, in Pakistan. The fundamental concept is to augment curative services with preventive and promotive services aimed at improving resistance to and decreasing contact with common infectious organisms. Three major challenges are discussed along with ideas for meeting them.
