Abstract:
The effect of thiourea (a denaturing agent) on the molecular associations in aqueous solutions of high molecular weight Poly (N-vinyl-2pyrrolidone) is investigated by viscometric technique. Intrinsic viscosity and Huggin`s constant KH of the polymer solutions were found to decrease upon addition of thiourea. The decrease in [rl] and KH values increased with increasing concentration of thiourea. This decrease in the values of [ri] and KH in the presence of a denaturing agent can be explained on the basis of the rupture of bridges formed by water molecules among different PVP chains. Hydrogen bonding being responsible for these intermolecular associations. The effect of increase of temperature on the [rl] values was also observed in 1 M and 2M thiourea solutions. No change in reduced viscosities was observed for PVP in 2M thiourea. solutions, upon increasing the temperature from 298 to 303K. But in aqueous solutions of PVP the [n] values showed substantial decrease for the same increase in temperature.
