Abstract:
In this era of extreme and drastic climate change, there is a dire need to study and apply such scientific and high-tech approaches that can ensure sustainable agriculture. Synthetic fertilizers have played their role since long but they have also added some unwanted negative impacts to the environment as well. One of such smart approach is the use of nanofertilizers (NFs) and related nano-products. NFs are of submicroscopic size macro/micronutrients, or encapsulated nutrients with larger surface area to volume ratio and greater mobility. NFs can efficiently increase the soil quality, crop performance and production. These can efficiently replace the synthetic sources of macronutrients and micronutrients. NFs make sure the availability of nutrients to plants in rhizosphere. These are also known to play their role in enhancing the defense mechanisms of plants against various biotic and abiotic stresses. Use of NFs and nano particles also increases the postharvest health of crops. Recent research related to NFs and their aggrotech approaches have proven their long-term beneficial role to assure food security globally. But the question raised here is “Are all nanoparticles/nanofertilizers are safe to be used in all types of soils?”. As soon as we are able to answer this question, market and commercial value of nanofertilizer will also be clear to common man and end user.
