Abstract:
Epoxy resin nanocomposites were prepared from diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA)/ 3,5-diethyltoluene diamine (DETDA) and poly(2,6-dimethyl 1,6 phenylene ether) (PPE). An organoclay, modified with 12-aminolauric acid, was dispersed in DGEBA using an ultrasonic probe. Wide angle X-ray diffraction showed an intercalated structure for the clay in the fully-reacted epoxy nanocomposites. PPE phase-separated upon curing and the resultant multiphase structure was studied using DMA. It was observed that the glass transition temperatures and rubbery moduli of fully-reacted epoxy resins increased with the addition of 10 wt % of PPE and of 5 wt % of organoclay.
