Abstract:
An anaesthetic method using glyceryl guaiacolate before inducing anaesthesia with a thiobarbiturate was evaluated on 50 horses undergoing clinical surgery and diagnositic procedures. Acepromazine was used as premedication. Induction of anaesthesia with thiopentone or thiamylal sodium was preceded by intravenous infusion of a 15 percent stablized solution of glyceryl guaiacolate. Halothane in oxygen was used for maintenance of anaesthesia. It was concluded that this technique of inducing anaesthesia in the horses was safe and efficient for use in the field as well as hospital conditions.
