Abstract:
A suspension of particles has an effective viscosity that is different from that of the carrier liquid in which the particles are dispersed. This is so because the presence of particles causes an increase in the resistance to fluid deformation. A theoretical analysis is presented to predict the effective viscosity, taking into account the contribution of the particles, for the case of a suspension of fibre flowing as a free surface sheet under gravity. Results show the increase in viscosity to be substantial and a function of the concentration and size of the particles.
