Abstract:
Seeds of three varieties of rice, Patnai-23, Latisail and Nizersail were irradiated with two dosages of X-rays and thermal neutrons. A thorough selection was carried out both at seedling and mature plant stages of M1. Replicated yield trials with selected normal looking healthy plants of the mutant and parental stocks were carried out for three successive years. Selected lines were grown and reselected on individual plant basis. All undesirable plants were eliminated and finally the selected lines were tested along with the parental varieties. The result showed that highly significant variations existed in M1 whereas, the difference in variations become reduced to the level of insignificance at the succeeding generations M2 and M3 thus showing that heavy screening at M1 was very effective and there was very little practical value for selection in either M2 or the following M3 generation.
