Abstract:
Aqueous extracts from leaves and fruit-pericarps of Melia azedarch Linn. invariably inhibited germination and radicle growth of Pennisetum americanum, Trifolium resupinatum, Lactuca sativa and Brassica campestris. Soil collected from underneath Melia was also inhibitory against the same 4 aforementioned test species. Aqueous extracts reduced the survival of seedlings grown in nutrient solution. The toxicity depended upon the part assayed, amount of material soaked, duration of soaking and the test species used. The presence of bare areas and association of few unhealthy species with Melia is due to its allelopathy. It may not be, therefore, grown on agricultural lands.
