Tatara : a high yielding drought tolerant wheat variety for rainfed areas of NWFP.

Abstract:
The wheat breeding research efforts conducted at Nuclear Institute for Food and Agriculture (NIFA) Peshawar culminated in to the development of potential wheat genotypes, suitable for the moisture stressed rainfed areas in NWFP. One such genotype, WS-395 proved its worth for high yield and drought tolerance. It was initially selected from the Semi Arid Wheat Screening Nursery (SAWSN) during 1989-90. The line was then evaluated for grain yield and other agronomic traits in statistically well designed experiments over a period of five years. It gave the top grain yield (3513 kg ha-1) as compared to other promising lines and the check variety in advanced yield trials during 1990-91. The line was then evaluated in the multi-locational micro-plot tests during Rabi 1991-92 in the province. In these tests it also produced second best mean grain yield (3875 kg ha-1) and showed no symptoms of any disease. On the basis of high yield potential, disease resistance, drought tolerance and other agronomic attributes the line was included in the National Uniform Wheat Yield Trials (NUWYT-Rainfed 1992-93). Again it proved its potential for high yield and moisture stress tolerance. During mandatory evaluation in 1993-94 in the national trials it ranked third among the tested candidate lines. WS-395 after showing consistent performance for wider adaptability and grain yield stability was finally released in the name of “Tatara”, as a new improved variety in 1996 for general cultivation in the rainfed areas. Despite the recent disease epidemics on account of the break down of Yr27 in the country, the variety showed highly desirable resistance for yellow rust across the locations.
