Abstract:
The survey reveals a serious epidemiological situation of tuberculosis that exists in the country. A pool of 54 percent of infected children aged 5-9 years, 1.9 percent of persons aged 10 years and above, with chest X rays indicated active tuberculosis and 0.31 percent of smear positive tuberculosis case fully support above conclusion. Accordingly, the number of persons aged 10 years and more with chest X-rays suggesting active tuberculosis as estimated at 1.1 million and the number of open smear positive cases at 180,000. One percent of risk of infection indicates 50-60 new AFB positive cases occurring yearly among 1,00,000 population, which means that among the present 97 million population, 82,500 to 1,00,000 new AFB positive cases are occurring per year. Pakistan National Tuberculosis Association has been assigned the responsibility to carry out the tuberculosis control programme effectively to combat the menace.
