Abstract

Not all nanomaterials are feasible candidates for agricultural applications due to their different structural and chemical properties. We tested the agricultural significance of nano zinc and iron oxides, nanocomposites and heterogenous materials on different vegetables and cereal crops. Enhancement in the cauliflower growth and yield due to nano-ZnO and nano-CuO was substantial. Similarly, exogenous application of Fe-Zn nanocomposite significantly promoted tissue specific Zn and Fe fraction and contributed to yield enhancements. In potato, foliar application of nZnO promoted Zn internalization in tuber and enhanced yield. In addition, application of various Zn and Fe nanoforms promoted growth of radish plants inter-cropped with pea plants, although these had a negative effect on pea growth and yield. Nano-biochar application recovered pea growth and promoted radish physio-biochemical traits. Yield enhancements of wheat and rice were also recorded in response to foliar application of these nanomaterials. In an overall assessment, exogenous nanomaterials enhanced net-primary productivity in plants and contributed to substantial internalization of essential minerals. This property could be the delivery of herbicides, plant growth stimulants, and sources of essential micronutrients to promote the biofortification of cereal crops and vegetables. The information could pave the way for future developments and a step towards nano-enabled sustainable agriculture.
