Abstract:
The effect of N sources, application rate of urea-N, temperature, salinity and sulphur coating of urea, on ammonia-N loss was studied under field conditions on calcareous clay loam soils. A reduction of 20 percent loss in ammonia-N was observed from ammonium sulphate over urea. Increase in temperature from 30° C showed a significant increase in ammonia loss from urea. On normal soils, increasing the dose of urea-N from BO to 160 kg N/ha increased the ammonia-N loss by 40 percent. Coating of urea with elemental sulphur in the ratio of 4:1(urea:sulphur) resulted in significant reduction in ammonia-N loss. The results suggest the use of ammonium sulphate or sulphur coated urea on normal to slightly saline soils to get higher returns. On saline soils, urea can be used without significant loss of nitrogen as ammonia)
