A comparison of sodium hypochlorite, propolis and saline as a root-canal.

Abstract:
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare in vitro the cleanliness of root canal walls after irrigation with different irrigants. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of thirty-three recently extracted single rooted human teeth were used in this study. The teeth were divided into three groups according to the irrigating solution used: 2.5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCI), Propolis solution. and saline as control. The teeth were instrumented by K-type files using step-back technique and irrigated with one of the three irrigants. After the experimental procedure, the roots were split and examined under the scanning electron microscope. RESULTS: The results of this study indicated that propolis solution produced superior cleaning of the root-canal wall as compared to NaOCL. Saline performed most poorly in cleaning than the other two groups. Cleaning was better performed in the cervical and middle thirds for all groups with the least. cleaning in the apical third. CONCLUSION: Propolis achieved the best cleaning of root-canal walls followed by hypocholorite and saline.
