Abstract:
Six cultivars of cowpea were evaluated for length of the main tendril, branches/plant, leaves/plant, green weight/plant, leaf area (length x breadth), protein content and green fodder yield at the Fodder Research Station, Sargodha, during 1980-82. Out of these, new cowpea variety, P-'518'produced longer main tendril highest number of branches/plant, more leaves/plant, maximum green weight/ plant and leaf area. The crude protein and average green fodder yield also increased over check in ' P-518'. Therefore, this variety out-yielded the check, in fodder yield potential and was better in quality and with mild tolerance to pests, hence recommended for general cultivation under irrigated conditions in the Punjab.
