Abstract:
Background: Hepatitis B (HBV) is a global public health issue, with millions of people developing chronic infections. This study examined HBV prevalence and risk factors in three-trimester pregnant women at the Sudan Family Planning Association (SFPA) and El Obeid Teaching Hospital. From January to July 2023, pregnant women attending Sudan Family Planning Association and El Obeid Teaching Hospital's Obstetrics and Gynecology departments participated in a hospital-based cross-sectional survey. A standardized questionnaire was used to collect socio-demographic data and HBV risk factors from 226 pregnant women, with a 98.2% response rate. Each trial participant gave five mL of venous blood. Screening HBsAg Rapid HbsAg testing was done, and ELISA (ToshoAIA900) verified the positive result. Most pregnant women (31.4%) were 21-25 years old. Most participants, 125 (55.3%), were urbanites, and most women, 107 (47.3%), had multiple births. Overall HBV prevalence was 11 (4.87%). HBV prevalence was high (45.4%) among 26-30year-olds, urban (76.3%), and pregnant women with >2 birth frequencies. No statistically significant association was found between HBV infection and risk factors for transmission (history of surgical procedure, dental extraction, gestational age from first to third trimesters, history of abortion and blood transfusion, history of jaundice, and hepatitis B vaccination). The overall HBV prevalence was 4.87%. This HBV prevalence in pregnant women shows intermediate WHO HbsAg endemicity. This study demonstrated no significant association between sociodemographic and predicted risk factors for HBV infection, except for age. We found immunization effective as a preventative approach.
