Abstract:
Screening of blood films taken from a total of 57 Coturnix cot urnix (Eater) collected from Kohat during August and September 1980, showed a new species of avian malaria parasite and it has been named as Plasmodium coturnixi. Infection was established in two non-infected birds from this natural infection and observations remade by making blood smears at every two hours interval for two days. The length of the erythrocytic schizogony of this new species in Coturnix was determined by observing the peaks of trophozoites and schizonts in blood induced infection. The schizogony was completed in 24 hours. The differential morphotogy of trophozoites, schizonts and gametocytes was also studied in two experimentally infected natural hosts. The experimental infection of chicks of Mini Red breed was not successful by blood inoculation.
