Abstract:
The word drought has been used as a buzz phrase in the recent years. The definition of drought is discipline oriented and for different peoples it has different meanings. Drought is a natural phenomenon and is a part of many hydrological systems. The prediction of drought is a cumbersome assignment, as it is difficult to predict when the drought begins and when it finishes. The rainfall may give a relief in drought but this does not mean that it is the end of drought. In the present paper, drought is defined on agricultural, meteorological, hydrological and socio-economic bases. Various drought- identification indicators have been presented, to work out severity of drought from hydrological data. The impacts are also described, in brief, corresponding to each drought-definition.
