Abstract:
Geotechnical laboratory tests of geological materials/aggregates are essential for all the civil engineering projects. Best possible efforts are made to imitate the field conditions in the laboratory, following the international standards and specifications. In Pakistan, AASHTO, ASTM & BS methods provide the standards and specifications for the geotechnical laboratory tests. These tests are carried out on both disturbed and un-disturbed samples. Precise sampling is very important for the accuracy and authenticity of the test results. In this paper, different soil and aggregates tests are presented in the context of their purpose and procedures. The standard procedures and specifications are followed using the standard instruments and equipments. Since soils and rocks are highly variable in their engineering behaviors, laboratory tests are necessary to identify and classify the soil and rock mass, as well as in interpretation of their engineering and mechanical properties. For precise calculation and computations one should be aware of data limitation when doing computation. The tests results based on engineering properties of soils and aggregates provide a strong base for designing and materials recommendation, in order to secure maximum safety and economy of the projects.
