Abstract
A study on reduction of drag by supercavitation for axisymmetric bodies was done numerically with a bubble two-phase model using commercial CFD code Fluent 6.1. The work included the effect of body shape on drag coefficient and supercavity sizes; drag coefficient Cd as a function of cavitation number; and the effect of the ratio of length L to diameter D on drag reduction rate. The work on drag reduction method of supercavitation shows that supercavitation greatly reduces the drag coefficient. There may be a best combination among body shape, cavitation number, engineering feasibility and so on, which makes the drag reduction rate highest. The results were compared with the experimental results of Stinebring, Billet and FU Huiping’s, numerical results. A good agreement was found between the predicted and experimental results.
