Abstract:
Length, Fineness, and Strength are the three most important characteristics of cotton. But the local upland cotton is famous for its high strength. These cottons have a proven strength of 85,000 to 96,000 M Psi. In view of the proven high fibre- strength, this character is not discussed. But it should not be understood that this character is being neglected and Afzal (1986) has already cautioned the cotton breeders to ensure that fibre strength is not impaired. Over-all fibre length of Pakistan cotton has improved over the years, but all the cultivars of Pakistan cotton possess almost similar fibre length and fineness characteristics. Length uniformity and micronaire need a great deal of improvement. Since custom-ginning is not possible, Cotton Control Act should be enforced strictly, or through fiscal and legislative measures the farmers may be induced to buy seed from Government Seed Corporation and NOT use their own seed for sowing. At the ginning factory staple-length may be determined by Halo Method. Gra- ding of lint may be done by instruments. HVI should be inducted into Pakistan for grading. To start with three systems, one each for PICReJ, Punjab and Sind may be imported.
