Abstract
In basic delayed-and-sum beamformers, the output of each sensor was delayed to allow the coherent addition of all the inputs. The result was maximization of power of the SOI but provided no means of reducing noise or cancelling unwanted interference signals. The necessity for improvements in system performance brought about methods for adaptive beamforming. The adaptive beamformers automatically adjust to the input data on the sensors in an attempt to maximize the bearing resolution of a signal and minimize the effects of noise or interfering signals. All the adaptive beamformers perform well if the sensors are stationary over the time required to collect the data. During manoeuvring, towed array beamforming degrades if a straight array is assumed. The proposed algorithms for adaptive beamformer have been designed to operate on nonstationary arrays. The beamformer directly rates any changes in array shape or heading that may occur during the time required to collect the data. The output of the adaptive beamformer is shown for synthetic data of a towed array. Results show that bearing accuracy, bearing resolution and interference suppression when the array shape and track are incorporated into the beamformer for non-stationary platform.
