Abstract:
Habitat, morphology, anatomy and reproduction of Porphyra vietnamensis Tanaka et P.-H. Ho, collected from the coast of Karachi (Pakistan) have been investigated in detail. Its crude methanolic extract and six sterols isolated from it have also been tested for antifungal activity against nine species of pathogenic fungi. Cycloartanol was found to be the most active and stigmasterol the least so. Aspergillus flavus and Trichophyton rubrum appeared to be the most resistant fungal species while Aspergillus niger and Penicillium funiculosum were the most sensitive. Various sterols exhibited different patterns of activity and different fungal species showed various modes of sensitivity to these sterols.
