Abstract:
Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming an increasingly prevalent aspect of modern society, with applications ranging from voice assistants and image recognition to decision-making algorithms and autonomous vehicles. While AI has the potential to greatly enhance our lives, there are concerns regarding its impact on human cognitive abilities. As such, this study aims to investigate the longitudinal effects of AI on human cognitive abilities. This is a longitudinal study that followed participants over a period of 6 months. The study recruited a sample of 200 participants aged 18-60 years, living in urban areas in the Karachi, who use technology on a regular basis. Participants were recruited through social media and online advertising and was asked to complete an online survey. The survey consisted of validated questionnaires to assess cognitive abilities, including memory, attention, problemsolving, and decision-making. Participants were asked about their use of AI and other technologies, as well as demographic information and lifestyle factors. Data was collected and analyzed using statistical techniques. Firstly, descriptive statistics was used to summarize the cognitive performance of participants at each time point. Finally, moderation analyses were conducted to explore the potential influence of individual differences such as age, education, and attitudes towards AI on the relationship between AI exposure and cognitive performance. Results showed a significant dependency of people on AI technologies which possibly be the reason of their average or below average performance in cognitive tests. This study has the potential to provide important insights into the impact of AI on human cognitive abilities. By assessing participants over time, it will be possible to investigate any changes in cognitive performance that may be associated with exposure to AI. Furthermore, by examining the role of individual differences, the study will provide a more nuanced understanding of the potential risks and benefits associated with AI. Ultimately, this research could inform the development of AI technologies that are more supportive of human cognitive abilities and help to mitigate any potential negative effects of AI on our cognitive functioning.
