Abstract:
Pejerrey of Lake Titicaca (Basilichihys bonariensis) is the most numerous and commercially important fish in the lake. This fact motivated the current study to determine the incidence and level of infection of the metazoan parasite, Diplostomum mordax, during the months of January through December 1993 in pejerre. Eight hundred and fifty-eight fish were examined. This parasitological study took place at the Hydrobiological Resource Investigation Center of the Department of Biology, at the University of the High Plains in Puno, Peru and the Department of zoology of Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. At the later location the metacerearia of the parasite was identified and the revision of the work was done. The results showed a parasitic incidence of 8% in the total fish and areas sampled. Area A (Puno Bay) reported 12% parasitism, while Area B (Capachica) reported 4% The analysis of variance (ANOVA), with a P
