Abstract:
The alpha track formation mechanism at different registration temperatures of CR-39 track detectors has been reported in this work. The track formation is studied at three registration temperatures i.e. –5°C, 26°C and 40°C using 252Cf as alpha particle source. The variation of track density with etching time for the three detectors is also studied. The response of CR-39 track detectors is found to increase with the rise in temperature of detector during irradiation. It is observed that the variation in track density with etching time is different for the three detectors. The greater bulk etch rate of the detector which was exposed at 40°C as compared to the other two detectors has been observed. This shows that irradiation of detectors at higher temperature increases the bulk etch rate of the detector. The results are discussed in detail and more systematic studies are recommended to explore further track formation mechanism at different temperatures of CR-39 track detectors.
