Abstract:
In 82 biopsy proven cases carcinoma of the oral cavity three other diagnostic methods, namely cytology after mouthwash, cytology after scraping and toluidine blue, were compared with biopsy for sensitivity, specificity, patient acceptability, convenience of examining physician, time taken for reporting, cost and the requirements of material, back-up facilities and professional skills. The sensitivity and specificity of the various tests respectively was as follows cytology after mouthwash 87 9 and 100% cytology after scraping 91.5 and 100% and toluidine blue test 84.3 and 89 3% slides prepared from scraping material were better than those prepared by mouthwash but the later method had the advantage of sampling multiple lesions and that material could be collected by a nurse or aide unlike the scraping method which had to be done by a physician or a dentist. Toluidinc blue test was the cheapest and quickest, and could be useful when no back-up facilities of a cytology or histopathology laboratory were available.
