Abstract:

A low cost full-displacement (cone) pressure meter (NFDPM) has been developed at the University of Newcastle, UK. In-situ testing was carried out at two sites consisting of soft to firm clays. This paper presents the key design features of the NFDPM and the test procedure followed during field testing. It also includes the application of the cylindrical cavity expansion theory to the in-situ testing data obtained from the test sites in order to derive the soil strength and stiffness parameters.
