Abstract:
The natural products are gaining much significance in the domain of nutrition to cure various maladies and to improve the quality of life. Amongst, natural extracts are of momentous worth for instance; these biochemical moieties are isolated by various plants having nutraceutical attributes for utilization in various food based products. Numerous bioactive components have been considered to be utilized as therapeutic agent and a variety of these vital components are present in wheatgrass juice. It holds significance health claims owing to its better phytochemical profile i.e. chlorophyll, flavonoids, apigenin, minerals, amino acids, enzymes, vitamins etc. It is considered as a general-purpose health tonic for several years especially an excellent blood tonic, elevates the blood hemoglobin content and improves oxygen transport, it is thus helpful with people suffering anemia. Apart from being a blood builder, wheatgrass juice is also a blood purifier greatly assisting in the removal of waste products of the body due to its detergent properties. Moreover, it is said to be helpful in the removal of carcinogens, harmful chemicals and heavy metals present in the body. The free-radical scavenging activity of wheatgrass juice and its active ingredients might be helpful in chemoprevention and controlling progression of tumor growth. In this comprehensive treatise, efforts are made to elucidate the antioxidant, anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, gastro-protective, and anti-diabetic activity of wheatgrass juice. The products of wheat grass juice can be taken as fresh produce, tablets, frozen juice or powder. The current article is also an attempt to cover all available literature pertaining to the wheatgrass juice with special reference to phytochemistry and allied health claims.
