Abstract:
Non dimensional functional relations correlating the product of critical discharge per unit width, qc, and hydraulic gradient or slope, ie of streams in uniform flow with the sediment characteristic size, k, have been deduced and verified with experimental data of varied nature. If Uqc≡ (gqcic)1/3 where g is the acceleration due to gravity, it is established that the pure numbers Ugc/Vs and Uqc/Utc are respectively functions' of the ratio of the particle size k to the channel depth Dc, the particle size and its width at the base, b, the ' dispersion' of the particles and the particle size Reynolds numbers Utc k/v, VsK/v and Uqckv, where Utc, where Utc is the critical shear stress velocity, Vs is the fall or terminal velocity of the particles of size k and v is the Kinematic viscosity of the moving fluid. Discusses the results of experimental verification, both numerically and physically. The established relations are also valid for correlating data on initiation of bed configurations such as ripples, shoals, bar, rills and seals.
