Abstract:
Purpose: The study is done to compare the results of penetrating keratoplasty as a treatment of perforated corneal ulcers, using a relatively opaque corneal button removed during an operation of keratoplasty, to those similar patients undergoing penetrating keratoplasty using a clear corneal donor material, as regards saving the eyeball and improvement of visual acuity. Methods: Penetrating keratoplasty was performed in 50 eyes of patients of perforated corneal ulcers using a relatively opaque corneal button, in 50 % of eyes, and a clear corneal material in remaining patients. Incidence of recurrence of the disease, and improvement in visual acuity was noted and compared. Result: There was no significant difference in the recurrence of the disease, but improvement in visual acuity was better in clear cornea group. Conclusion: Opaque corneal donor material used in tectonic penetrating keratoplasty for treatment of perforated corneal ulcers is as good in saving the eyeball as is the clear corneal donor material.
