Abstract:
In the year of 2022 and 2023 the Hindu Kush ranges received a multiple GLOFs events as well the area was hit by a severe flood. In Kumrat valley of the region, the impacts of floods and GLOFs on different land uses were assessed through GIS and field inventory. The results showed that the area of water bodies increases from 170.5 ha to 174.5 ha, while forest land reduced from 8737 ha to8667 ha. Similarly, the area of agriculture land reduces from 632.50 ha to 550ha, while built land decreases from 307 ha to 306.5 ha. The area of bare ground exhibits a net decrease of 1482.5 ha, while an 1103.50 ha reduction occurred in snow-glaciers and rangeland exhibits a net reduction of 176 ha. Overall agriculture land in the area reduced by 13% that resulted in a net reduction of320.37 million USD in their total ecosystem services (ES). A reduction of 0.8%in forest land reduced the total worth of ES by 592.28 million USD, while are duction of 1.24% area in rangeland caused a total loss of 10.61 million USD. Though the area of water increases by about 2%, however, an 11% decrease was noted for SG, thus a net decrease of 9.8% occurred in WB and SG, which caused an annual reduction of 348.92 million USD in the ES of the WB and SG. Rehabilitation of the degraded land through biological and engineering structure, flood protection and soil and water conservation measures are required to cope with future floods.
