Abstract:
Pakistan faces the dual challenge of climate change vulnerability and an overburdened healthcare system struggling with infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and resource limitations. While global advances in green biotechnology are reshaping sustainable healthcare models, their adoption in Pakistan remains fragmented due to policy gaps, weak regulatory frameworks, and limited public-private collaboration. This paper highlights policy pathways for integrating green biotechnology into Pakistan’s healthcare settings as a means of enhancing climate resilience and public health security. Priority strategies include strengthening governance through clear biosafety and bioethics regulations, incorporating biotechnology and climate health innovations into medical and pharmacy curricula, incentivizing public-private partnerships to support eco-friendly diagnostics, vaccines, and medical devices, and promoting sustainable healthcare infrastructure through solar powered facilities, biodegradable medical waste management, and green procurement policies. At the community level, preventive health programs can be expanded by deploying climate smart biotechnological solutions such as biosensors for water quality monitoring and bioengineered approaches for vector control. By linking One Health principles with national priorities, these measures can reduce the ecological footprint of healthcare, enhance resilience against infectious diseases, and align Pakistan’s health system with the Unsustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The integration of green biotechnology into healthcare policy thus represents both a scientific necessity and a political imperative for ensuring equitable, climate resilient, and sustainable healthcare for Pakistan’s population
