Abstract:
The effect of KBr on critical micelle concentrations (CMC`s) of a cationic surfactant, cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) in the absence of buffer at pHs between 8.0-10.0 using a pH-stat technique was investigated. A study was also carried out in the presence of buffer at pH 9.2 and the results are compared. The CMCs were found to be independent of pH over the region studied. The addition of carbonate-bicarbonate buffer and KBr both reduced the CMC. The results give strong support to the fact that only the counter ions of added salt make a contribution to the shift of the CMC.
