Abstract:
Defining delta as a region by the two outermost distributaries of a stream, the delta of the Ganges river may be delimited by its Western distributary, the Bhagimthi, its North-eastern and eastern distributary., the Baral-Dhaleshwari-Meghan a Channel and the Bay of Bengal. Many writers not adhering to the above definition have drawn arbitary lines to demarcate the extent of the Ganges delta. Their views are considered critically to show that a proper appreciation of deltaic characteristics is essential for a correct delimination of the Ganges delta.
