Abstract:
The present study was designed to determine estradiol levels during different pubertal stages, in order to generate baseline data for the Pakistani female population, specially among girls yet to reach puberty, as usually the levels of adult women in the follicular phase are used for evaluation of young girls. Estradiol levels among adult Pakistani female population during different phases of the menstrual cycle were also evaluated. Serum estradiol levels of one hundred thirty one female subjects, divided into pre-pubertal, peri-pubertal and pubertal/adult stages, were evaluated at the Reproductive Physiology laboratory of the NIH, Islamabad, using Microparticle Enzyme Immuno Assay (MEIA) technology of M/s Abbott Laboratories. Samples from the pubertal/adult stage subjects were taken in the follicular phase. Serum estradiol levels of an additional 65 regularly menstruating female subjects, with a cycle of 28+2 days, were also evaluated. The subjects were divided into follicular, ovulatory and luteal phases of their menstrual cycle, depending upon the day of sampling. Data were compared using students ‘t’-test. Mean estradiol levels (pg/ml) during different pubertal stages were 47.6+1.45 (prepubertal), 66.21+6.78 (peri-pubertal) and 65.02+10.46 among the pubertal/adult subjects in the follicular phase and during different phases of the menstrual cycle were 65.02+10.46 (follicular), 152.40+302.16 (ovulatory) and 72.35+1684.40 (luteal) among the pubertal/adult regularly menstruating subjects. The study showed that the level of estradiol were least at the pre pubertal stage, and exhibited a significant increase with progress towards puberty. During different pubertal phases, although levels of estradiol were within the permissible levels, however, great individual variation was observed, which resulted in a high standard error. The estradiol levels at peri-pubertal and pubertal/adult stage did not vary significantly. However, as the pre-pubertal girls had levels significantly lower than the pubertal/adult women, it is essential that levels be specifically determined for various stages of the female reproductive years.
