Abstract:
The rates of SN2 (P) reactions in the alkaline hydrolysis of a series of methylaryl phosphates with varying leaving groups have been measured in water at 39° and a constant ionic strength of 1.0. Logarithmic plot of the rate constants against the pKa`s of the leaving groups is linear with a slope of -0.70. Kinetic isotope effect and activation parameters are consistent with the bimolecular nucleophilic displacement mechanism.
