Abstract:
Ammonium sulphite has been produced by the simultaneous action of air and gaseous ammonia on heated iron pyrites. Addition of sodium chloride incorporate reduced the formation of sulphur dioxide and hence increased the percentage yield of ammonium sulphite. Reactions were carried out at different temperatures and duration with varying amounts of sodium chloride incorporate. The maximum yield was found to be 81.6% with air and 87.6% with oxygen at 500 C.
