Abstract:
Unilateral injury to the frons affects the orientation of locust to a lamp. They mostly turn the injured side away from the lamp at 3 hours after the injury. This tendency is suddenly reversed as they mostly turn the intact side away from the lamp. This tendency remains for 5 days, after which again there is reversal of tendency as they mostly turn injured side away form the lamp. Moulting restores the cuticular sensitivity to its normal level. Hoppers (5th instar) show exactly the same kind of reversal of behaviour following injury as do adults, and on the same time scale. Suggested interpretations include the possibility that injury makes the damaged part more sensitive for first few hours, then 'numb' for next 4 days until multipolar neurones regenerate
